Choir News

It was with regret that we heard Brian our organist and choir master, had decided to
retire at the end of January. Brian stepped into the breach after Robert Thompson
resigned, and then took on the permanent position four years ago.
Despite small numbers in the choir, Brian always strived to enrich the Sunday services
with the highest standard of music; the choir especially loved the Choral Evensongs
and other special services, when we could welcome our ‘extras’ – sopranos, altos,
tenors, and basses, known by Brian – to join us in our praise. We were delighted when
he returned to us after his serious illness, and was sufficiently recovered to visit the
palace to receive his MBE for services to music.
In the many years since he was a choir boy in St Anne’s Cathedral under Captain
Brennan, Brian has amassed an immense knowledge and experience of traditional
Church of Ireland music, which he tried, hopefully with some success, to impart to us
humble choristers. Brian has not given up music completely – he is still involved with
various choirs and we know that he will be in great demand as a ‘sub’ organist –
so we wish him all our very best wishes for this next stage in his musical journey.
Thank you Brian. St Molua’s Choir
