The Ladies Guild was very pleased to welcome Dr Lauren Smyth from Clifton House to give us a talk and presentation on the “Women of Clifton House”.
The Woman’s Charitable Society was set up in the 18th century to deal with poverty in Belfast, distinct from the workhouse, and although the most renowned woman was Mary Jane McCracken we heard of many more – both benefactors and inmates.
A most interesting and informative afternoon, which may possibly lead to a visit in the near future.
