ABOUT

The Gardens

The Ward family designed the Bangor Castle Walled Garden in the 1840s. It was previously closed to the public and was considered by many as a secret garden. The local council restored this beautiful garden and it was officially opened as a visitor attraction in April 2009.

The garden is divided into four different sections, each with its own horticultural personality. It also boasts two unique pieces of sculpture inspired by North Down’s maritime history. The garden won the Royal Horticultural Society Award for Permanent Landscaping in its first year of opening.

The Museum

Uncover the fascinating saga of the area in Northern Ireland’s most visited small museum, located in the picturesque stable block of Bangor Castle in the beautiful grounds of Castle Park.

The story of the region’s history, archaeology and wildlife unfolds before you through a series of exciting audio-visual displays and intriguing exhibits. Here you will see examples of archaeological finds, such as the Ballycrochan Swords, dating from 500 BC, and a 9th Century hand bell which marks the period when Bangor’s monastery was one of the most important in Christendom.
